It is important to know whether or not your employees are eligible for UK tax relief. You can check an employee's tax relief status by contacting HMRC.
Please note – Pento will not calculate Employee pension contributions with tax relief if the Employee does not have an NI number stored in Pento
Tax Relief on Pento
To claim tax relief on behalf of your employees, you will need to ensure their National Insurance number is entered on Pento.
As part of your legal duties, you will need to provide an employee's NI number if you have it.
If you don’t have an employee's NI number when you’re enrolling them, you’ll need to update it later. It’s important you do this as soon as possible so they don’t miss out on any tax relief they’re entitled to.
There’s an exception for overseas nationals who are waiting to receive their NI numbers. By law, pension providers are able to claim tax relief for this group of workers without an NI number. You’ll need to update their contribution on Pento to the Net percentage i.e. 5% less 20% tax relief = 4%
Tip - You can backdate tax relief if you forgot to add an NI number to an Employee, see Help Article How to Add Backdated Pension Contributions for more information.
